Gendered Ageism in AI

Is artificial intelligence just a big ol’ boys club?

This is Sandra Tsing Loh with the Loh Down on Science.

AI learns from the internet – it soaks up EVERYTHING! The good, the bad…and the biases?

Douglas Guilbeault and colleagues at Stanford studied how prejudice affects chatbots.

The researchers analyzed over one-point-three million online images. And? Women were often shown as younger than men. A subtle, but powerful bias!

But does AI trained on internet data reflect these biases? Apparently, YES!

The researchers asked ChatGPT to generate resumes with traditionally male and female names. Verdict? ChatGPT resumes represent women as significantly younger than men. And less experienced!

Turns out, fixing biases in A-I might take more H-I. Human intelligence!
