Dust to Death

All we are is dust in the wind…

This is Sandra Tsing Loh with the Loh Down on Science.

Sandstorms are intensifying globally. Did you know dust clouds affect long-term health?

Enter Hailu Zhu and team from the China Pulmonary Health Study. They enrolled nearly FORTY-SEVEN THOUSAND people across urban and rural China. Then they tracked their health for ELEVEN YEARS.

The results? SHOCKING! For every microgram increase in dust particles, respiratory disease death rates jumped SIX PERCENT. And heart disease deaths? FIVE PERCENT higher!

This means breathing desert dust today can silently shorten your life years later.

The more we understand about dust exposure, the better prepared we can be to reduce its health impacts. For now, we just keep collecting dust.
