Violets are like ambitious office interns, just waiting to shoot their shot!
This is Sandra Tsing Loh with the Loh Down on Science.
Many plants eject their seeds in one big burst. But violets launch seeds one by one. Cheongsan Kim from Seoul National University asked why.
Kim found that violets’ canoe-shaped pods don’t explode. As the seed pod’s valves curl inward, they pinch shut from tip to base. This creates a squeeze that fires seeds in sequence!
They can fly up to ten meters per second! Inspired by this, researchers created a precision stapling device to close up wounds! In early tests, it closed fake wounds in five seconds!
Huh. Maybe violets should take their “staple guns” and work as surgeons instead.
