Sugar Rush, Tumor Crush

Are we finished ruining soda for you? NOPE! Never.

This is Sandra Tsing Loh with the Loh Down on Science.

You know who just LOVES a sweet treat? CANCER!

Just ask Lewis C. Cantley and team from Weill Cornell Medicine.

They studied mice genetically prone to intestinal tumors. Half the mice got daily doses of high fructose corn syrup, the sugar in many sodas. They monitored tumors and the animals’ overall health.

The sugar-fed mice developed over twice as many intestinal tumors as the control group. This happened without any weight gain! Inside those tumors, sugar turned into fatty acids, the building blocks of new cell membranes. The tumors were eating sugar!

Sweet news? Not at all.
