Blubber Boat

Feeling bloated after Thanksgiving?  Good news: a boat that runs on human fat!

This is Sandra Tsing Loh with the Loh Down on Science.

A favorite story from our 20-year archive is that of Earthrace—a high-tech 2007 wave-piercing trimaran powered by biodiesel. Biodiesel is an eco-friendly, zero carbon footprint fuel derived from livestock feed and animal fats.

In an extreme show of commitment, captain Pete Bethune and two crewmates had liposuction, donating the sucked-out fat. The blubber from the debloated boatmen was converted to biodiesel to power the boat, while presumably lightening the load on board.

And? Success! Earthrace smashed the world record, circumnavigating the globe in less than 61 days!

Instead of the Love Boat, call it the Love Handle Boat.
