On Christmas Day we ask: church air is pure—literally?
This is Sandra Tsing Loh with the Loh Down on Science.
Chemists at Australia’s Queensland University of Technology made a miraculous discovery. Stained glass church windows literally clear the air when lit by sunlight.
Lead researcher Huai Yon Zhu believes medieval glaziers were the world’s first atomic technologists. To create beautiful images, glaziers coated colored glass with tiny gold particles. But that also created the equivalent of a modern-day photocatalytic air purifier.
Light shining on tiny gold particles forces surface electrons to oscillate in sync. This amplifies the local electromagnetic field—sometimes enough to ZAP nearby airborne toxins into harmless compounds. Inspiration for efficient new green energy devices.
Think Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. And by “sun” we mean solar!
