Nature’s Blueprint

Meet Nature’s hottest engineers… rivers!

This is Sandra Tsing Loh with the Loh Down on Science.

When river deltas empty into the ocean, they build new land. These landscapes feed ecosystems and protect coastal communities. Can we predict how they’ll grow?

Researchers Tian Dong and U.C. Irvine’s Alejandro Tejedor searched for answers.

They compared satellite images from hundreds of river deltas worldwide. Despite their different shapes, they all followed the same mathematical pattern. It was like finding nature’s instruction manual for making deltas.

The longer a river channel grows, the more land it can build. This blueprint could improve coastal restoration and predict vulnerable deltas before seas rise.

So, nature’s already got the blueprint. We just wanna give it some support.
