Ladies, pass on the sugar.
This is Sandra Tsing Loh with the Loh Down on Science.
Here in America, where the high fructose corn syrup diet reigns supreme, diabetes is common. That causes insulin resistance, which prevents sugar breakdown. What can we do about it?
Trinitee Oliver and Adjoa Osei-Ntansah from Howard University looked to androgens. Those are hormones that play a role in metabolizing fructose. They studied mice with and without liver androgen receptors. Half ate a high fructose diet, others, a calorie-controlled diet.
Findings? Females without androgen receptors were protected from developing insulin resistance, despite a high fructose diet.
Guess women with low androgen receptors are lucky. The rest of us gotta watch that corn syrup!
