Memory Multiplier

Exam time? Or CRAM time?!

This is Sandra Tsing Loh with the Loh Down on Science.

Where’s that file the boss asked for? Where did I put my keys??! In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we can’t remember EVERYTHING!  If only we had a brain boost!

Studies have shown that our memories form when we sleep. Nicholas Ketz and colleagues at the University of New Mexico wanted to IMPROVE memory building by stimulating the brain during sleep.

How? By using non-invasive electrical signals. Over twenty adult volunteers were given a memory test — before and after a good night’s sleep. Some participants received brain stimulation while asleep, while others didn’t receive any.

Did these electrical brain “pokes” help at all?

Yes! Those with brain stimulation did better on their memory test than those who slept without. These scientists may have found a way to boost memory WITHOUT disturbing sleep! The researchers hope that this could lead to improved memory function in our everyday life.

But for now…WHERE did I put the remote??!
