Perfect Shot

A physicist, a mathematician, and a chemist walk into a coffee shop…,

This is Sandra Tsing Loh with the Loh Down on Science.

Making your own morning coffee these days? Trying to make your Starbucks “usual” is tough! Behind every cup of Joe is some serious science. How does your local barista make the perfect espresso every time?

Christopher Hendon and Jamie Foster teamed up with other highly caffeinated researchers worldwide. They looked to an unlikely place for answers – batteries! Electricity moves through batteries like water moves through coffee grounds!

Using high-tech models used in specialized chemical studies, the team searched for the optimal water-to-coffee formula. Then, of course — the taste-test! After hours of crunching numbers and many shots brewed, they found a solution!

Use a coarser grind, with less grounds for the best espresso! Coarse coffee gives a better extraction for more consistent flavors. You can use twenty-five-percent fewer beans and still get a perfect shot! That saves you money in the long run.

Eh, too much math! Maybe I’ll just stick to Animal Crossing, napping. . . and herbal tea…
