You can’t hide your aging eyes…
This is Sandra Tsing Loh with the Loh Down on Science.
Is it me, or are these crossword puzzles getting SMALLER?? Age-related vision problems can be caused by a gradual loss in photoreceptors. Those are special cells inside the eye that catch light to help us see. Can our dwindling eyesight be saved?
D. Palanker and researchers at Stanford University may have an EYE-deal solution!
Five study participants over the age of 65 had major loss of their central vision. The researchers first implanted microchips inside the patients’ eyes. These microchips help convert light into electric currents that stimulate cells in the eye. Special glasses with cameras help the subjects’ capture and focus light onto the microchip. Think: TEENY-tiny movie projectors!
Vision tests revealed that the implants improved the patients’ vision. Even TWO YEARS post operation! What an AMAZING spectacle!
There is currently no effective way to prevent or restore lost sight. BUT this technology could be the SEE-lution!
You don’t need glasses to SEE how awesome science can be!
